Stuwing

 

Rond de 3e of 4e dag krijgen de meeste vrouwen last van stuwing. Je borsten zijn opgezet, voelen zwaar, gespannen en pijnlijk. Maar ook in de periode van borstvoeding daarna zal je nog wel is last krijgen van stuwing. Volle borsten of korte periodes van stuwing zijn helemaal niet erg. Je kindje is waarschijnlijk aan het regelen en je borstvoeding pas zich daar op aan wat tijdelijk zorgt voor stuwing. Door je kindje aan te leggen op zijn vraag en eventueel iets vaker (op jouw verzoek dan) als je borsten erg vol aanvoelen, stemt de productie zich vanzelf weer af op de nieuwe vraag.

Het leed dat stuwing heet:

  • Het gevoel dat je borsten ‘klappen’. Ja het doet pijn, soms zelfs veel pijn. Leg minimaal elke 2 uur aan om te verzachten. Kolf eventueel een keer extra af om de ergste druk er af te halen.
  • Ademen is soms zwaar door stuwing. Denk niet direct dat er iets mis is met je hart of longen. Stuwing kan er voor zorgen dat ademen moeizaam gaat. Dit gaat vanzelf weer over wanneer de stuwing ook verdwijnt.
    Mijn ervaring: aan het eind van de eerste week wist ik even niet meer waar ik het zoeken moest. Mijn lichaam had een opdonder gekregen van de bevalling en nu kon ik ook nog is zo moeizaam ademen dat ik dacht dat ik het aan mijn hart had. De tip die ik je kan meegeven: maak je er niet te druk om, na een paar dagen verdwijnt het vanzelf weer!!
  • Verhoging of koorts bij stuwing. Dit is een lastige. Want is de koorts nu het gevolg van een borstontsteking, een ontsteking down under of is het gewoon je lichaam die reageert op de stuwing. In de eerste week kan de koorts ook zeker een gevolg zijn van stuwing. Neemt de koorts niet af na 24 uur, trek dan aan de bel.

 

Tips om stuwing te voorkomen of verhelpen

  • Zorg dat je kindje goed heeft aangehapt en laat elke keer minimaal 1 borst goed leegdrinken.
  • Laat je kindje zelf de duur van de borstvoeding bepalen. Haal niet zelf je kindje eerder van de borst maar wacht tot je kindje klaar is.
  • Leg regelmatig aan. Vooral in de kraamweek. Maar ook daarna blijft dit belangrijk.
  • Biedt altijd beide borsten aan.
  • Voed op verzoek. De borstvoeding zal zich dan aanpassen aan jouw kindje.
  • Sla geen voedingen of kolfbeurten over en stel ze ook niet uit. Moet je weg? Probeer dan te kolven op de momenten dat je thuis ook ongeveer zou voeden.
  • Combineer borstvoeding niet met kunstvoeding. De borstvoeding kan zich niet voldoende aanpassen als je de ene keer wel en de andere keer geen kunstvoeding bij geeft.
  • Introduceer bijvoeding geleidelijk.
  • Bouw niet te snel af. Te snel afbouwen zal zorgen voor stuwing. Wanneer je wil minderen of helemaal wil stoppen bouw dan heel rustig af. Laat steeds wat meer tijd tussen de voedingen zitten en/of voed steeds iets korter. Laat geen hele voedingen ineens vervallen. Geleidelijk afbouwen is ook voor je kindje het prettigste. Daarbij kan te snel afbouwen voor een borstontsteking zorgen.
  • Zorg voor een niet te snelle overgang naar vast voedsel. Het zelfde geldt voor de overgang naar vast voedsel. Wil je de borstvoeding steeds meer gaan vervangen door vast voedsel, doe dit dan geleidelijk. Ook hiervoor geldt: laat niet ineens hele borstvoedingen vervallen maar bouw rustig (deels) af. Het lichaam van je kindje zal ook moeten wennen aan vast voedsel, dus ook om die reden is een geleidelijke overgang belangrijk.
  • Masseer je borsten niet (na). Je stimuleert dan alleen maar de melkproductie wat de stuwing zal verergeren.
  • Maak gebruik van warme kompressen of een kruik in een warme doek. Warmte zet de melkkanaaltjes open, hierdoor worden je borsten iets beter leeggedronken. Daarnaast werkt warmte verzachtend voor de gespannen borsten.
  • Draag een goed passende, niet te strakke, bh. Overdag kan je eventueel wel een bh met beugels dragen wanneer deze écht goed zit en nergens knelt. Draag ’s nachts geen beugelbh, deze zal hoe dan ook ergens gaan knellen in de nacht.
  • Heeft je kindje moeite met aanhappen door de stuwing? Je kunt je tepelhof zacht maken en je tepel meer naar voren laten komen door de Reverse Pressure Softening methode te krijgen. Druk met je vingertoppen een minuut tegen je tepelhof, verplaats je vingers iets of wat en doe dit nogmaals een minuut, herhaal die 3 à 4 keer. Zo maak je je borst/tepelhof minder gespannen en kan je kindje beter aanhappen.
